On the 3 June 1969, Basil Joseph van Wyk, entered the university as a 12-year-old, and today, 3 June 2019, proudly celebrates 50 years at the place he calls “work”.

Basil started as a young general worker and has climbed the ladder to be in the position of Building Manager in the RW Wilcocks building as he celebrates his golden anniversary.

The celebration does not stop at the 50-year celebration, his only son also celebrates his 38th birthday today! Basil is married to Pauline – 41 years- and the couple has three children and six grandchildren. One of their grandsons is currently in his final year of a BCom degree at Stellenbosch University.

Basil started his journey as a 12-year-old in 1969 because he wanted to help his grandparents financially as he there where many a night that the family did not know where the next meal would come from.

Today, he is grateful that he took the step and has learned an immense amount and thank God for his journey at the University of Stellenbosch where he has seen seven rectors leading the establishment in his 50 years at the university.
