Conversation with Neil Buchner by Oliver Chikodzore

In one line give a description of what you do or what are you busy with?
My name is Neil Buchner Jnr and I’m a freelance illustrator and frontman to the band PXLS. As an illustrator, I do everything from logos, posters, business cards, T-shirts, murals and storyboards. At present, I am working on a logo, a framed commission, PXLS merchandise, a zine and PXLS second EP cover.

How was your passion born?

I have been drawing for as long as I can remember and I have always had a love for music. Art was always an outlet for me and I loved creating my own ‘realities’. My love of music blossomed just before high school when I lived in Wellington for a while with my uncle. Wellington is a small town and I ran out of things to do, so I took up guitar and became obsessed.

What makes South Africa unique?

South Africa is unique due to it’s rich cultural landscape, beautiful nature and friendly people.

Do you think your program is important, for you, for the economy and sustainable development? Why?

Art is a universal language. I think fostering illustration in the economy is important because every industry uses design to market their brand in some form, and you can teach yourself how to do it.

What do you think has to take place to transform South Africa into the

“Best innovation capital in the world?’

I think we need better broadband and cheaper data. I also think we need to foster and encourage creativity more in the education sector. In my opinion, everything is design to an extent. The main software developer at Apple is probably this generation’s most important artist.

What makes the work you do worthwhile? What sphere of your industry gives you a reason to stay in the industry?

I love doing work for other creatives and work for social causes, as I enjoy projects that make a difference and inspire me artistically.

What about the ‘hot topic’ of transformation? Do you think this is realistic, with the aim of building a more inclusive and best place for all?
I think it is realistic, but a lot of things will have to change. We need to address the atrocities of the past and work on fixing the problems that have stemmed from them. As Steve Biko said, ‘“The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.”

The marketing industry has changed drastically over the past few years with the influence and evolution of social media. Do you think the South African industry’s marketing strategies have been able to keep up to speed with these changes? What social media marketing strategies have you adopted that people in your circle of influence wouldn’t have been able to utilize 5 years ago?

Yes, I think they have to an extent. I would say that being able to promote posts to specific audiences is a big one, and I think the fact that my generation is the first to grow up with social media is advantageous.

Although challenges often feel like the straw that will break the camel’s back, what are your biggest challenges since the establishment of your talent and are there any lessons you have been able to draw from them?

I have learned not to get discouraged by unopened doors and to create my own opportunities.
