About 100 residents of Azania took to the streets of Stellenbosch on Friday, 14 May for a peaceful protest about the lack of service delivery in the area. Residents built shacks on the farm Watergang in August 2018 and say since then they have not received any services from the Municipality. The Municipality bought the farm in June 2019 for about R45 million. ‘’No basic services, no vote’’, ‘’we demand basic services’’, and ‘’why are they ignoring us,’’ read some of the posters held by protesters. In a memorandum received by Municipal Manager, Geraldine Mettler, residents demand basic services such as clean water and sanitation, adequate roads and access to electricity. One resident told Stellenbosch Magazine it is particularly hard for kids and elderly people to live without adequate sanitation or water. ‘’Our children must use the fields to relieve themselves.
